Is EMDR Therapy Effective for Addiction Treatment?

Yes, when used to resolve distressing memories as one part of a comprehensive addiction treatment program. If distressing events have led to or worsened addiction, EMDR can be a helpful piece in an addiction treatment program.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is used for healing emotional distress due to past traumas or negative experiences.

What Happens in an EMDR Therapy Session?

During the first few sessions, an EMDR therapist collects history and information about distressing events. An EMDR client does not need to provide a lot of details about the events for this type of substance abuse treatment to be effective.

Then, during the next few sessions, the EMDR therapist will teach skills that can be used to manage any strong emotions that might arise during treatment. The therapist will then work with the client to help them identify negative thoughts or beliefs that are linked to the memories of the event, and the positive thoughts and belief they’d like to replace them with.

In the next step of EMDR therapy, the therapist uses eye movements (the client’s eyes follow a light or the therapist’s finger), alternating side tapping, or alternating tones to guide a client to reprocess the memories and replace the negative beliefs with positive ones.

Following successful resolution of these areas, the therapist will help the client assess if there are residual negative thoughts or beliefs and will help you target these in the same way. At the end of the session, the therapist may suggest a calming activity to close the session.

How Long Does EMDR Therapy Take?

This depends on each individual person and the extent of the distressing events they would like to target. For some people, therapy can be completed in as few as 6-7 sessions. Otherwise, it may require more sessions as needed.

A Multifaceted Approach to Residential Addiction Treatment for Men

To improve your chance of recovery, our men’s rehab program focuses on three major factors of treatment: your mind, body, and spirit. As one or more of these areas become unbalanced, they can directly contribute directly to your substance use disorder.

All of our providers are experts in their field and utilize specialized treatment programs for each individual. By developing an individualized approach for each of our guests, we can successfully break old habits and work to promote new and healthy ones.

Mind

Substance use disorder starts in the mind. Daily services are provided to guests in the men’s rehab program to help restore proper cognitive thinking and processing. Healing is fostered by experienced clinicians through group therapy and individual therapy sessions using the latest advances in research in the mental health field.

The professionals at Serenity Springs realize that drinking and illicit drug use is only a symptom of mental health disorders and not the root cause. The goal is to have guests leave the program with an understanding of their disease and mental clarity that they could have never imagined before beginning substance abuse treatment.

Body

Drug and alcohol abuse destroys the body. Serenity Springs’ treatment options help heal the body through proper nutrition, exercise, and supplementation. Those who enter the men’s rehab program begin healing on day one of treatment.

Delicious meals are designed by a nutritionist and prepared by a professional chef. Additionally, guests at our Florida rehab center will have access to healthy snacks 24 hours a day. guests leave Serenity Springs with their bodies feeling completely rejuvenated.

Spirit

Our treatment program focuses on healing broken spirits and is one of the best male rehabilitation centers in Florida. Beginning with daily meditation, guests work every day, both individually and in support groups on reducing selfishness, gaining discipline, and changing their perspective on life.

Guests work through the 12-steps with experienced staff members who have recovered from addiction themselves by going through the same process. By being given the framework to produce a vital spiritual experience, guests leave our substance abuse treatment program with newfound freedom and happiness they never thought possible.
