What to Expect in a Men’s Drug Rehab Program

For someone struggling with substance abuse, knowing what to expect in drug rehab can make the decision to seek help much easier. If you’re a man struggling with addiction, a rehab center specifically for men focuses on the thought processes and emotions many men go through and identifies trends, coping styles and behaviors that can help you overcome your addiction. If you’re ready to learn more, consider some of the common therapies specific to men working toward recovery in drug or alcohol rehab.

Reasons to Choose Drug or Alcohol Rehab

If you’re struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, you may have difficulty managing your daily life. Often, it takes a conversation with family and loved ones or an intervention to push you toward drug and alcohol rehab. You or others will begin to see warning signs that drug and alcohol use is starting to impact your life. These signs may include:

  • Lack of interest in things you once loved
  • Changes in appetite
  • Lack of physical grooming
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships
  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Using more often
  • Changes in behavior, including mood swings and increased irritability

What to Expect in Drug Rehab

Treatment options can vary from one individual to the next depending on the type of addiction and which type of program you choose but typically include inpatient or outpatient care. At Serenity Springs, we offer three types of programs: residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs.

Residential Program

Residential treatment in rehab centers provides you with a safe environment, including ongoing support and medical assistance, to help you detox and recover quickly from alcohol and drug addiction. Also referred to as an inpatient program, it’s designed to treat serious drug or alcohol addiction. In inpatient treatment, you’ll receive 24-hour care provided by licensed healthcare providers and mental health professionals. Treatment may last anywhere from several weeks to 6 months, depending on the severity of your condition.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP Rehab in Florida is a less intense treatment for individuals who prefer to return home at night after spending the day in treatment. While less intense than inpatient care, it’s still more intensive than regular outpatient care. You’ll receive treatment several hours a day for up to 7 days per week. This treatment is typically not recommended for someone struggling with severe addiction because it leaves them with too many idle hours at home without supervision or guidance. It may be recommended for those in the later stages of the recovery process and those with excellent family support.

With PHP, your day is structured and includes a combination of individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy, education and activities focused on helping you build better-coping skills.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) treat alcohol and drug abuse without needing around-the-clock supervision. They’re recommended for those who don’t require detox and can continue with normal daily activities, including work, or for those with family or work commitments that prevent admittance into residential care. This treatment option typically lasts up to 12 weeks and includes many of the same treatment options as residential care and PHPs.

What Days Look Like in a Treatment Center

At Serenity Springs, our men’s residential approach to treatment focuses on the mind, body and spirit. This includes group and individual therapy, nutrition, exercise, supplements, daily meditation and support groups. We implement the 12-step program, which provides you with the tools you need to develop healthy habits and focus on your physical and mental health.

The Intake Process

The intake process takes place right after you arrive at the facility. You’ll need to complete your paperwork and submit your insurance information. A staff member will explain your rights and responsibilities while in treatment. You’ll also go over the list of banned items, which include non-prescription medications, inappropriate clothing, sharp items or weapons, electrical items like cell phones, laptops and cameras and personal items, including mouthwash, jewelry and cologne.

Detoxing

Detox is the first step in residential treatment centers. During this step, all traces of drugs and alcohol are removed from the body. Many individuals go through physical withdrawal symptoms, which can be intense and may require medical assistance. For safety reasons, some drugs require a slow taper, which can extend the time you spend in the detox phase, but this phase is necessary to prepare you for treatment.

Individual Treatment Plan

Each individual treatment plan focuses on helping you create a healthy daily routine without the need for drugs or alcohol. Your day will be structured and begin with a healthy breakfast. Mornings may include therapy, trips to the beach, exercise classes and meditation. We also use other advanced therapies like acupuncture. There’s plenty of supervised free time during the day for hobbies and special interests or just to relax. At night, you’ll enjoy dinner and have the opportunity to socialize with others in the treatment program.

Returning Home After Treatment

Addiction recovery will provide you with the tools and coping mechanisms to return to your normal life. Your aftercare plan may include regular follow-ups with your medical provider, additional outpatient treatment, counseling and group therapy. It’s important to keep any follow-up appointments to help ensure your success.
